AWAVA has made a submission in response to the inquiry on the adequacy of existing offences in the Commonwealth Criminal Code and of state and territory criminal laws to capture cyberbullying.

In the submission we brought the Committee’s attention to the four priority areas for consideration:

  • the need to understand the sexual and gender aspects of cyberbullying, and technology-facilitated abuse generally;
  • the need to address the experiences of diverse groups in relation to these issues;
  • positive approaches to preventing violence and bullying;
  • women and girls active as human rights defenders, and facing backlash and abuse online as a result.
