AWAVA condemns the sexual violence and abuse in offshore detention sites and requests urgent action by the Australian government, including bringing refugee women who have been sexually assaulted to Australia for appropriate care and access to abortion in cases of pregnancy if they choose.
The Australian government should also take further action to help prevent future assaults. This requires an end to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers in offshore facilities where there is clearly no adequate protection or avenues for redress.
