Weekly Round-up* 11th March

WOW! What a busy fortnight! I hope you all enjoyed your International Women’s Day celebrations, and have managed to find some time to read all of the media releases that have been circulating.

Here is a summary, in case you have missed any

As for us, AWAVA was officially launched by the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick, at a fantastic IWD breakfast hosted by the ACT Women’s Services Network (ACTWSN).  The event, mc-ed by Virginia Hausegger was held at the Kamberra Winery and had Her Excellency the Governor General Quentin Bryce as the guest of honour, with Commissioner Broderick giving an inspiring speech. She also launched our Timeline Project – “The Australian Women’s Timeline” check it out here

Women’s Timeline – Centenary of International Women’s Day

To celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day, the Australian Women Against Violence Alliance (AWAVA) has created a timeline of significant events and achievements affecting Australian women.

The timeline includes major political, educational, legal and social milestones, and demonstrate that despite improvements in gender equality over the past 100 years, women still experience violence at intolerable levels.

AWAVA has produced print- and web-based resources for use in upper primary and secondary schools and by community organisations. We are also using social media (twitter AWAVAWomen) and local events to spread the message that all forms of violence against women are unacceptable and must stop.

The timeline was created with assistance from the Australian Government Office For Women. It took months and hundreds of hours from a small group of women to gather the content that is included on the website. Only a small portion of the events we have collected currently appear on the timeline. New events will be added over coming months.

The timeline can be viewed by clicking on our grey Timeline tab and contains timelines for upper primary (junior) and secondary school and above (senior) timelines. In addition there are resources available to promote the timeline and assist educators with using the timeline.

This is from all of us at AWAVA, to all of you, on the Centenary of International Women’s Day.

And here is a short YouTube video we created about the timeline:
